Campanili. Matera - Potenza

We have installed two ChitChatAudio devices – one in Matera and the other in Potenza – to explore the relationship between the two Lucanian capitals, often in conflict due to local rivalries.

This initiative provides an opportunity to build a bridge, express frustrations, and release burdens and envy, to debunk myths or reinforce popular stereotypes.

The event was part of our collaboration with the “From Zero to Zero” Festival of Social Envy. “Da zero a zero” Festival dell’invidia sociale. “Da zero a zero” Festival dell’invidia sociale.

Real-Time Communication and Moderation

People on the street could record and send voice messages of up to 30 seconds to the other town using the red button. With the green button, they could listen randomly to the voice messages recorded by the other side, providing a way to understand what the others think about them. vocali registrati dall’altra parte, un modo per comprendere cosa quegli altri, pensano di noi.

To facilitate communication, we tested an optional feature of ChitChatAudio: real-time voice alteration. This was designed to ensure total discretion and maximum anonymity.

The collected messages were subjected to real-time moderation. Before the public could hear every message was reviewed, approved, or banned by a moderator. For some messages, we replaced instances of profanity with beeps before making them available for listening.

The Debate + Bonus Content

The systems were installed for 14 hours (9 AM to 11 PM). During this time, they collected a total of 600 messages, which were processed into 6 clips of 90 seconds each, categorized by major themes: tourism, politics, and beauty. We started with messages of love to debunk myths and prejudices.

All banned content was compiled into an extra segment that is not available on social media.

Equal Even in Insults

Out of the 600 messages collected in a balanced manner between the two towns, 150 messages were banned due to containing only profanity. Most of these were recorded after 8 PM by individuals under 25 years old, again showing a perfect balance in terms of quantity and quality. qualità

The purpose of the project is to investigate local rivalries. For this reason, we created an extra content piece — not available on social media — where we compared the mutual curses and insults, divided into four categories: the "f*** off"", the "go to hell", the "sh**", and generic swear words. It turns out that even in this context, the two towns are exactly alike; even in profanity, they resemble each other, with only a few exceptions that you can identify by watching — and listening to — the video.
